Reading this was comforting and perhaps even vindicating. Just this morning I had a conversation about releasing something new, and immediately began to talk myself out of it because of the expectation that I film myself in my studio, talk to a camera, and live up to some idea of who the artist should be for the people who might buy. This expectation of accessibility is deeply troubling, especially to those of us who are sensitive to begin with.

Sometimes the desire to see behind the curtain is coming from a place of deep appreciation and curiosity; in my experience, I have seen it come from a place of (perhaps unconscious) envy. If they can see how you did something, they no longer need to have as much admiration for the work, you're no longer as special, and that makes them feel better about themselves. Art can be threatening to someone who feels the need to measure themselves against everyone else.

Perhaps there are just those people who appreciate mystery and wish to protect it, and those who think demystifying something gives them power over it. In any case, I am grateful there are people who appreciate the power of withholding.
