When Ahna and I were creating the previous fifteen photos (see previous Substack) we decided to make a series of corresponding photographs attempting to convey a different message while still keeping a focus on each mask. This entire set of photographs ended up feeling more erotic, or sexual, than I anticipated— a quality I wasn’t quite prepared for while making them.
The creation process of all photographs in this full series was cold (both figuratively and literally) and tactile. We had the masks, we know where we wanted to photograph them, and the intention was fairly simple. It could be the nudity causing the erotic nature however nudity isn’t inherently sexual, so while it may be a factor in their tone, I don’t believe it’s the main cause.
After viewing them again years later I believe they all have this feeling because of the juxtaposition of the nude body, form, and mask. This second set of photographs take on a more “dominating” feeling due to the strength and vibrancy of each mask and pose. While some masks have a more subtle and unobtrusive feeling, most of them are extremely raw and come off as harsh.
That rawness coupled with the posing, nudity, and confidence of Ahna (the model), truly allows the erotic nature to stand out. At the time, I hesitated even posting them because of this underlying condition but now, having hindsight, they have come to represent strength and power and should have a small place in the world.
As always, I would love to know what you think. Please do not hesitate to leave a comment or simply respond to this email if you’re viewing it as a newsletter.
I have always loved this series. I think you shared at least some of these on your Instagram a while ago. Obviously, they made an impression on me. :)
Such an incredible melding of both artists in this series that acutely reflects the masked period it was created
