A solitary figure grapples with despair, fear, and identity. Through dark, introspective scenes they journey from paralysis to defiance, to confronting the unknown. At a precipice, they face a terrifying leap into the abyss, embodying the struggle between life’s uncertainty and self-discovery.
‘Our Tides' is a three act, narrative & poetic film, showcasing a person’s potential last few hours of life, contemplating, or depending on how you perceive it, committing suicide. The screen will come alive in stark, monochromatic, black and white imagery immersing the audience in a world where despair hovers above an abyss. Each scene will mirror the duality of human emotions and as the narrative unfolds the landscape will echo the emptiness of the characters' souls. I aim to create tragedy with a grayscale palette, weaving a visual tapestry of despair and hopelessness, while simultaneously inviting the audience to reflect on the complexities of the character as well as the human condition. This cinematic experience evokes a profound contemplation of life's fragility and the indomitable spirit that seeks light amidst the darkness.
Each of the three acts are based on a quote by the incredible French philosopher, Simone de Beauvoir with additional inspiration throughout the film from photographers Anne Brigman and Francesca Woodman, author Clarice Lispector, and filmmaker Chantal Akerman. In a nod to Akerman, the film will be a “looping narrative” meaning there isn’t truly an ending, or at least the ending is questionable. The film begins where it ends, or vice versa, creating a unique time loop forcing viewers to develop their own interpretations of the film.
Narration provided by my friend Anna, whom I’m grateful for helping. Thank you Anna. Music is by Felicia Atkinson with a song called “Our Tides” which inspired the title of the tilm.
